SECTION VII
AWARD OF THE SOLDIERS' MEDAL--By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved 2 July 1926 (Bull 8, WD, 1926), and pusuant to authority delegated by Headquarters United States Army Strategic Air Forces in letter, file AG 323, subject: "Definition of' Administrative Responsibilities", dated 6 August 1945, announcement is made of the award of the Soldiers' Medal to the
following named officer and enlisted men:
Sergeant RICHARD V. MAROLEWSKI, 36683388, 28th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group, Air Corps, United States Army. For heroism after an aircraft accident in the Pacific between Iwo Jima and Japan on 3 May 1945. While ditching, the plane broke into several pieces. The tail section submerged at the forward end, enabling. Sergeant MAROLEWSKI to escape and in-flate his one-man dingy. He joined a companion who was swimming and went to help a gunner whose leg was broken. Putting the wounded man in the dingy, although he knew that this materially lessened his own chances .of survival, he and his companion made the wounded man as comfortable as possible. He clung desperately to the craft until a circling plane dropped two more dinghies. Then, despite their own serious position, Sergeant MAROLEWSKI and his companion administered first-aid to the wounded man and made him as comfortable as possible during the twenty-two hours they were adrift. His actions reflect great credit on himself and the Army Air Forces.
