We were APO 334 assigned to 30th Sqd 19th BG North Field Guam. We also spent time on Saipan and Tinian.
We flew bombing missions to: Uwajima, Hiratsuki, Okazaki, Ngoya, Uwajima , Nuto.
We were sent back to the US in July or Aug 1945 for additional training, stationed at Murock Air Base. We were there until after the big bomb was dropped in August 1945.
I was discharged Feb 22, 1946 at separation center Ft Sheridan, Ill.
I was born Oct 27, 1924 in a little KT town called Goldbug. At that time it was sitting on US 25, one of the primary routs North-South. It is now just off I-75, a major route North-South.
I was drafted just out of high school June 13 1943 and went to Selfuge Field in Michigan for processing. I had taken the test for Air Corps Cadet Training but had failed due to being 10 lb overweight. I was promised reclassification if I lost that extra 10 lb.
I was sent to Jefferson Barracks, MO for Basic Training. It was tough. I then went to the following schools:
Tech School Airplane mechanic 16 weeks
Tech School Aircraft mechanic Trouble shooter, B-29
Flexable Gunnery, Kingman AZ 7 weeks
Remote Control Gunnery, Ft Meyers FL 6 weeks
As I remember I joined a Crew in Almagordo and we were assigned an aircraft, a hugh B-29.
When I returned to civilian status, I took my old job back making beer cases in a Monroe Michigan Paper mill. Since closed.
I went to night school and increased my knowledge of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. I went to College under the GI Bill of Rights to study engineering.
I married a sweet young Polish girl from Toledo, OH, in 1953. After that it was all night school, part time and full time work to support family.
I graduated from the University of Toledo in June 1959 with a BSME degree.
I immediately took an Engineering job with the US Army Corps of Engineers in June 1959. I retired in March 1986.
I have unfortunately lost contact with all the members of my crew. I recently tried to locate them but with no success. Avril E. Foley 315 W 10th Ave Huntington, WV, 25701 (304)529-2516.
