M-10 before black bottoms

M-10 had more missions than any other in the 19th BG (probably 314th Wing) because it had one of the best radar sets. Maintenance was double teamed as Operations repeatedly called upon it to fly Radar Scope Photo Missions. The following target photos were provided by Vern Chandler along with the following commentary: DL

May 3 1993

"Darrell:

Re your comments on Joe Carroll's crew in M-10 on their Radar Scope Photo Missions.

The purpose of those was to get actual radar scope pictures prior to missions for the Radar Operator and Navigator to study beforehand. I don't have an actual scope picture and find none in my books on hand, but these two pages are fairly close, although the grid lines are added and the heading line. Points of land along water or river mouths were easy to spot for offset aiming points or line-up points, but the actual target if a factory building was more difficult. The practice on a run was for the navigator to head as close as possible to the landfall point by his dead reckoning supported by Loran or celestial aids. When in range, the radar operator could pick up the coast point or other landmark and the navigator use that to correct course. The bomb run then started by radar direction until the bombardier could see the target in his bombsight and assume control by autopilot.

We were assigned M-15 #61794 in late July which was newly arrived and had a slightly different radar set, I think the APS-23, but will check that with Dick Ackerman our Radar Navigator. Will also ask him to write something on radar bombing.

Anyway pilots, navigators and radar operators had to attend a special course on the new set because it was coupled to the autopilot. The Radar Operator could impose cross-hairs on the scope and assume control of the bomb run the same as from the Norden bombsight.

Radar Scope Photo Missions had the additional use of proving that a crew actually flew to the target instead of dropping the bombs on some fishing village. That didn't happen often, but there was such a problem with a few.

I might add that as a Lead Crew, we had both radar scope and strike cameras on virtually every mission!. The strike camera meant "Fly over the target until the bombs hit the ground" before turning away and getting the heck out of there. Others could turn and climb at the "bombs away point."  Vern
